The Best Piece Of Advice I Was Given About Making Things

In 2022, I read Adam Savage's "Every Tool's A Hammer," which had a piece of advice that changed my Maker trajectory.

I had been in a creative rut as a Maker and wasn't enjoying building things the way I used to. I was also making a lot of mistakes: giving up on challenging projects, accepting "good enough", and Making something for the sake of content, not because I wanted to make the thing.

Until one day, I read "Every Tool's A Hammer," and through it, Adam said to me:

But what does that mean, to go deep? As a maker, it means interrogating your interest in something and deconstructing the thrill it gives you. It means understanding why this thing that has captured your attention has not let go, and what about it keeps bringing you back. It means giving yourself over to your obsession.
— Adam Savage - Every Tool's A Hammer

That day, my whole life changed.

For as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with Disney and Star Wars, but I hadn't brought that into my projects as much. This quote stuck with me and was the spark that turned into the passion I now have for creating Themed Solutions. My obsession needed to be part of what I was Making.

Don't make the same mistake that I did and separate what you Make from your obsessions.

Make your obsessions part of your Maker projects.
