1 Tip I Would Give Someone Who Wanted To Start Making Things For Themselves

Do you want to start Making things for yourself?

I have been Making things for 8 years now. And what I can tell you (from experience) is that in order to succeed as a Maker, you need to be willing to learn, willing to fail, and willing to think big.

So, here's the 1 tip I would give you if you wanted to pursue being a Maker:

Learn how to break down complex tasks into many simple tasks.

Looking at the full project from the start can be overwhelming.

Don't stress out and quit, but start breaking the project down into big components. Once you have components and know how they go together, break the components down. Keep breaking components down lower and lower until you are at the material level.

Plus, once you learn how to break things down, you can repeat this for absolutely any project, no matter how complex.

Your Breakdown Now Starts Your Checklist

Great checklists make great projects, but terrible checklists (or worse, no checklist) break projects.

Your breakdown starts with the end and works backwards. Flip your breakdown around and use it to create your checklist for the build. Using your breakdown will also highlight any areas where you can overlap tasks.

Between your breakdown and checklist from it, you'll be set up for success on your project.

Taking the time to plan ahead will save you time in the long run.
